NAFDAC destroyed fake drugs worth over N100m in Sokoto

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC), has destroyed N100.7million worth of fake, counterfeit medicines and unwholesome regulated products from Sokoto and Zamfara states.
Speaking at the destruction exercise in Sokoto, acting Director –General of the agency, Mrs Yetunde Oni disclosed that some of the products were voluntarily submitted to NAFDAC by various governmental organizations while others were mopped up from open markets via enforcement activities and surveillance system of NAFDAC.
Mrs Oni noted that counterfeiters continue to adapt different strategies to ensure that they evade arrest and “enjoy proceeds of their corrupt practices.”
But she asserted  that in keeping with anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari ,NAFDAC would  continue to deploy all strategies to ensure that the violators are not only arrested but also face the full wrath of the law.

“This periodic exercise further gives credence to the fact that NAFDAC is continuously waging war against persons or organizations involved in counterfeiting of regulated products,” she stated.
The NAFDAC boss who was represented by Director Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Dr Musa Umar, added: “The destruction of various categories of regulated products is one of the strategies employed by NAFDAC to prevent the circulation of fake counterfeit medicine and unwholesome regulated products.”
She declared: “We assure you that with our strengthened enforcement and surveillance system, we would have little or nothing to destroy as we are tirelessly working toward ensuring quality efficacious safe medicines and wholesome regulated products to the Nigerian populace.”
The NAFDAC DG expressed appreciation to Governor   Aminu Tambuwal, the Sultanate Council in Sokoto, sister agencies and other stakeholders for their support in the fight against counterfeiting, drug abuse and misuse.
“The success of enforcement and surveillance activities is dependent largely on inter-agency collaboration and cooperation,” Mrs Oni noted.
She appealed to the general public for the sustained support and collaboration towards safeguarding a healthy nation.
