Jigawa state government to sign MoU with Olam Nig ltd to reactivate commercial groundnut farming

His Excellency the Ag Governor Barr. Ibrahim Hassan today received a delegation from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture/Chemonics Groundnut Aflatoxin Eradication Initiative in his office together with Roshan Tated of Olam Nig ltd.

The team led by Peter Okomoh were in his office to finalize a Memorandum Of Understanding between Jigawa State government and the consortium to reactivate commercial groundnut farming in jigawa state by arranging for the cultivation of high yield aflatoxin free groundnut for export and to meet the demand of local poultry feed producers.

Nigerias groundnut production nosedived because of the presence of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring toxin that makes it unsafe for consumption.

With the new arrangement farmers will be provided with quality seeds and aflatoxin treatment in their farms to produce good quality toxin free harvest. An export market is guaranteed with uptake capacity running into a million tons per annum.

Jigawa is the first state to come under this game changing programs primarily because of its pioneer attempt at repositioning the state as a major groundnut producer with 3,000 hectares cultivated in the 2017 cluster program.

The team applauded the states visionary initiative and commended the cluster arrangement of the Badaru Abubakar Administration for providing the perfect platform for the Aflasafe initiative to key in.

The Ag governor assured of the governments Commitment at using Agriculture as a springboard for the states economic revival program and said the famous kano groundnut pyramids will soon be reincarnated in Jigawa state.
