Federal Government is set to provide solar power to Sabon-Gari Market in Kano, Damilola Ogunbiyi, the Managing Director, Federal Rural Electrification Agency (FREA), says.
Ogunbiyi made this known when he paid courtesy visit to Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State at the Government House, Kano on Wednesday.
His Excellency Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR today received a courtesy call from the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency Madame Damilola Ogunbiyi and members of her entourage at the council chambers.
It will be recalled that couple of months back, the MD held a meeting with Governor Ganduje to partner with the state government in order provide solar power to Sabon Gari Market which was engulfed by fire couple of years back and has since then remained without power, and Governor Ganduje appealed to the Federal Government to intervened which is why the agency embarked upon this project as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari
Governor Ganduje thanked the Managing Director for her relentless pursuit of the project to Power Sabon Gari Market, and added that his administration will subsidize the installation cost for the people, emphasizing that this will not be done with the over N1.5Billion raised during the recently held appeal fund event to asist victims of fire outbreaks in Kano Markets.
The Governor also used the occasion, to appeal to the Rural Electrification Agency through the Managing Director, to look into the issue of over 20 projects that were started by President Goodluck Jonathan's administration but were abandoned, so as to complete them which will assist greatly in reviving the economicactivities in the state.
On her part, Madame Damilola Ogunbiyi briefed the Governor and members of the state executive council on the level of preparedness so far, which she said theyve completed taking the data of all the shops in the market, which she said are over 13,000 and that the market meeds 2.5 megawatts. Some of the shops will be fitted with individual solar power while high end users will be added to a bigger grid.
The project is expected to commence by December this year, and Kano is the first state to benefit from this intervention, Lagos and Abia will also have similar project executed in some selected markets.
