TVC News, Abuja - Operations
of Nigeria's emergency management agency, NEMA have been grounded by inhouse
labour unions at its headquarters in Abuja with staff asking for the immediate
sack of its Director General, Mustapha Maihaja.
Speaking with TVC News, the
workers led by their Chairman, Saad Bello also say they have ordered their colleagues
to shutdown services across the nation including those working in IDP camps.
At the
headquarters of the agency in Maitama district, management staff of the agency
were prevented from accessing the building as the workers used their vehicles
to barricade the main gate. The police are on hand to ensure that the protest
remains peaceful.
They insist
that until the welfare agreement signed between workers, management and the
ministry of labour is implemented, the emergency agency will remain shut.
With about
five NEMA staff dead due to poor conditions of service, the workers say Maihaja
has consistently failed to improve the agency or implement labour resolutions
brokered by the Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige. They want him to be
immediately sacked.
