The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission on
Saturday disclosed that it received N31.5 million assistance from the state
government.
The Chairman of the commission, Malam Lawal
Maidoki, who made this disclosure in Kano, said the assistance was part of the
government monthly effort to support the indigent patients in various
hospitals.
He explained that it was also part of the
pilot programme for 500 poor elderly persons in Sokoto town.
Maidoki, while distributing the money to
various hospitals and pharmaceutical shops across the state, said that the
gesture was aimed at ensuring a healthy society.
He said that N8.03 million was earmark as the
monthly medical assistance and the remaining amount will be used for the
luncheon of medical checkup and material assistance for 500 poor elderly
persons in the state.
According to the Chairman, this monthly
medical assistance has been a continuous programme, since the inception of the
administration of Gov. Aminu Tambuwal.
“The government is fully committed to
improving the health status of the people, as such initiated the new pilot
programme for poor elderly persons in the state in order to assist in their
medical checkup,” Maidoki said.
The chairman appealed to the partners –
pharmaceutical shops and hospitals – to use the money judiciously to ensure
fruitful result of the state government intentions.
He also called on the staff of the commission
to remain “coordinated and committed to their duty’’ in order to enhance the
welfare and health status of the people of the state.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some
of the benefitting hospitals include; Kware Psychiatric Hospital, Usmanu
Danfodio Teaching Hospital, Specialist Hospital Sokoto and Wamakko Orthopedic
Hospital.
