The Sokoto State Agricultural
Development Project (ADP) says plans are underway to introduce a new
sustainable farming technique to farmers, in efforts to boost agricultural
production in the state.
The Coordinator of the ADP,
Alhaji Lawal Abubakar, said this on Monday while speaking with News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto.
“In agriculture,
sustainability is a complex idea with many facets, including the economic
aspect. The social facet of agriculture entails fair dealings with workers and
beneficial relationship with the community and environment,’’ he said.
Abubakar said that
environmental sustainability factor in agriculture involved good stewardship in
relation to the natural systems and resources which farms relied on.
“This involves building and
maintaining healthy soils, managing water wisely as well as minimising air,
water and climate pollution.’’
He urged farmers in the state
to embrace the sustainable farming technique in order to boost their
productivity.
Abubakar said that the use of
technology was deemed appropriate, while considering the application of the new
farming technique.
“In Africa, only eight
countries, including Nigeria, are selected to test the new method, while only
Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano and Jigawa states are to benefit from the project.
“In Sokoto State, three local
governments areas — Yabo, Wammako, and Gwadabawa — are chosen for the project,”
